Welcome to CREDS, Cambridgeshire Race Equality and Diversity Service
There are two strands to the Service, one which focuses on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller achievement and the other on black and minority ethnic achievement, including English as an additional language (EAL). Within these strands, there are four teams, namely:
Contribution to aligned working within OCYPS in order to build mainstream capacity to provide access and raise the attainment of BME, Gypsy and Traveller pupils.
Support for senior leadership teams (SLT) in schools and settings to develop and evaluate the equality and diversity dimension of their leadership and management role.
Support for the development of an inclusive curriculum that values diversity.
Guidance for schools in developing policy and practice relating to equality, diversity and community cohesion.
Promotion of active participation of children, young people and families.
Equality, diversity and community cohesion
The Service provides support and guidance to schools and other Local Authority services on implementing the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (RRAA) and on meeting the duty to promote community cohesion (Education Act 2006).
Service staff also support schools in developing policies on preventing, dealing with, recording and reporting racist incidents, in line with the RRAA and relevant codes of practice.
A school’s race equality pack was sent into all schools in November 2003 and is available on the intranet and the schools’ portal. It includes Equally Safe, guidance and procedures for reporting and recording racist incidents in educational establishments.
In January 2008, county guidance and a framework for a single equality policy, Equality and Community Cohesion in Cambridgeshire Schools: Making Children Matter, was issued to all schools and chairs of governors and is available on the schools’ portal. CREDS provides training and consultancy support for schools and governing bodies on this.
