Home Languages

Over 100 languages are spoken in Cambridgeshire and the main and relatively established community languages are Bengali (Sylheti dialect), Cantonese, Punjabi and Urdu. New communities speaking languages other than English are growing in areas with traditionally less linguistic diversity. There are increasing numbers of Lithuanian, Portuguese and Polish speakers in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, and Tagalog and Malayalam speakers in areas around the hospitals. Polish currently has the highest number of speakers across the county.

There are growing numbers of children new to English in Cambridgeshire schools and the overall percentage of bilingual children is increasing across the county. CREDS works jointly with the Cambridgeshire’s ICT and Advisory Service to develop online resources for linguistic diversity to aid schools in promoting GCSE’s in a student’s first language.
